Borehole images now play a pivotal role in subsurface geological interpretation across diverse scenarios. “Borehole Imaging: Applications and Case Histories” book attempts to meticulously document numerous case histories while also delving into the intricacies of image acquisition and analysis techniques. It is important to note that this volume does not aim to cover the entire breadth of the subject but instead seeks to provide a valuable source of consolidated information within one comprehensive volume.
We hope that the broad spectrum of this text will inspire geologists to explore beyond their immediate areas of interest and potentially learn from complementary work in other domains.
This publication of “Borehole Imaging: Applications and Case Histories” emerged from an SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers) forum held in Breckenridge, where the need to document the use of borehole images became apparent. Subsequently, a conference titled ‘Borehole Imaging: Case Histories’ took place at the Geological Society of London, providing a platform for the presentation of real-world examples demonstrating the application and significance of borehole images. During that conference, many of the topics and materials found in this book underwent thorough discussion and examination.
The original meeting included interactive discussion workshops that proved to be both exciting and intellectually stimulating. However, it was challenging to document these sessions effectively. The event also featured a technical exhibition showcasing the latest advancements in data manipulation and interpretation, along with other forums that emphasized the presentation of case histories at the expense of highlighting technological developments. However, colleagues’ feedback emphasized the crucial necessity to document not just the acquisition of borehole images but also the potential for misinterpretation.
Moreover, a significant gap existed in available published material within this subject area.As a result, this final text has evolved over time, with additional papers solicited to comprehensively cover areas that previously lacked adequate documentation.
