This “Cased-Hole Log Analysis and Reservoir Performance Monitoring” book addresses vital issues, such as the evaluation of shale gas reservoirs and their production. Topics include the cased-hole logging environment, reservoir fluid properties; flow regimes; temperature, noise, cement bond, and pulsed neutron logging; and casing inspection. The appendices contain charts and tables for production logging. The work serves as a comprehensive reference for production engineers with upstream E&P companies, well logging service company employees, university students, and petroleum industry training professionals.

Since the first publication of this work, our industry has progressed. Whereas formerly production of hydrocarbons was from predominantly conventional reservoirs using vertical wells, it is now more common to produce from unconventional reservoirs using high angle or horizontal wells. This has resulted in a need for innovative methods for conveying measurement devices to the ends of the non-vertical wells.

Hopefully this revised second edition of “Cased-Hole Log Analysis and Reservoir Performance Monitoring” will bring the reader some useful insights to assist in day to- day improvement in the task of economical hydrocarbon production. It’s important to realize that drilling and completing a new well takes weeks or months, while the lifespan of a producing well spans years or even decades. Each year, the number of aging wells requiring remediation increases, reaching into the millions globally.

The tools and techniques described in this work constitute a vital, but often underrated, resource for tapping hydrocarbons that have already been found and they deserve to be more widely understood and used.
