Book Summary

The book “Basin Analysis and Modeling of the Burial, Thermal, and Maturation Histories in Sedimentary Basins” focuses on basin analysis, specifically one- and two-dimensional modeling of burial, thermal, and maturation histories in the context of assessing hydrocarbon potential. The work introduces a new modeling system, subsequently applied to continental basins.

We specifically focus on distinct aspects of basin evolution, such as the compaction of sediments deposited at varying rates, erosion of sedimentary strata and basement, intrusive and hydrothermal activity, thermal activation and reactivation of the basement, lateral heat exchange among blocks of multiple-aged oceanic and continental lithospheres, the shifting of spreading axes, and more. We employ alternative methods to oversee tectonic subsidence, isostasy, rheology, and lithosphere stretching and thinning.

To assess their individual contributions to the thermal history of basins, we model various situations, encompassing spreading jumping, the assessment of erosion heat, its influence on thermal history with connections to pre- and post-sedimentation events, intrusion activity, and the establishment and degradation of cryolitic zones (permafrost) in high-latitude basins of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Employing a joint analysis of heat flow transfer in the sedimentary cover and the underlying lithosphere and asthenosphere, we aim to enhance the reconstruction of their thermal and maturation histories.

To bolster the model’s validity, an additional robust control tool is implemented. This tool relies on the alignment of two calculations of tectonic curve subsidence of the basement surface. These calculations are derived from two independent approaches: backstripping and temperature-dependent density distribution in the crust. This approach serves to refine the simulation sequence for tectonic and thermal events in the history of sedimentary basins.
