The fracture and flow of rocks under stress, along with their geophysical and seismological implications, pose fundamental questions in rock mechanics. This text exclusively addresses these concerns, focusing on the deformation and fracture of rock specimens under general triaxial compression. In this scenario, where all three principal stresses are different, the ultimate strength of rocks is significantly affected. Additionally, the book explores deformation and failure following intermediate principal stress, presenting findings in both graphic and numerical forms.

“The book takes into account the intrinsic features of rock masses with in homogeneous or anisotropic structures. It also explores acoustic emission phenomena in rocks under various stress states. Additionally, it discusses friction in rocks in relation to earthquake phenomena, measured by a newly-designed shear-testing machine.”
