In this book of “Petroleum Reservoir Simulation Using 3-Phase, 3-D Finite Elements”, the author presents a detailed complex mathematical and computational model for the simulation of fluid flow in reservoirs. This research of “Petroleum Reservoir Simulation” was a collaborative effort with Dr. John M. Tyler of LSU and received funding from the United States Department of Energy. The findings were disseminated through a Ph.D. dissertation and presentations at various international conferences. Reservoir simulation plays a crucial role for oil and gas companies in both the development of new fields and the optimization of production in existing fields…”

Modeling fluid flow around wellbores with conventional reservoir simulators is inaccurate because radial flow occurs in the vicinity of the wellbore and these simulators use cartesian coordinates. In this research, we present a more accurate wellbore simulation by incorporating the finite element method (FEM) to simulate the radial flow in the vicinity of the wellbore and interfacing this finite element wellbore model with an existing finite difference method (FDM) reservoir simulator. While initially designed for a vertical well, this technique proves to be equally effective in modeling a horizontal wellbore. We employ this ‘hybrid’ solution for three-dimensional triphasic fluid flow, enabling a more thorough treatment of the near-well flow. We simulate the reservoir region, characterized by linear flow geometry, using finite differences on a Cartesian grid.
