Book Summary

This book of “Design and Appraisal of Hydraulic Fractures” is a brief introduction to technical aspects of hydraulic fracture completions. The book organizes content around key steps: job design, fracture placement, post-completion evaluation, and performance prediction. As such, the book presentation tracks what is essentially a standard “plan + do + measure + learn” completion-evaluation cycle as applied to hydraulically fractured wells. Chapter 1 covers job design and execution/

Placement, which reflects the “plan + do” parts of the cycle. Chapter 2 dedicates itself to evaluating and comparing in-situ stimulation with the designed process, while Chapter 3 outlines predicting and evaluating subsequent well performance. These last two chapters reflect the “measure + learn” cycle elements.

The “Design and Appraisal of Hydraulic Fractures” book targets a wide audience, including petro-technical professionals, geoscientists, and engineers of various disciplines, without assuming or requiring prior technical experience in the discussed methods. Each subsection includes a boxed summary of the key points and methods presented; reviewing these summaries should help the reader gain an understanding of the most important concepts in each subsection and how that material fits into the overall flow of the book.

As an overview of the state of the art, the book obviously weaves together and compiles the documented contributions of many researchers and practitioners. Therefore, our primary contribution lies in interpreting these original contributions and discussing our experience in applying them to address daily engineering queries. For those who want to delve more deeply into a given subject, references are provided throughout to the primary sources describing the methods, approaches, recommendations, and conclusions of these original contributors.

As with all publications, we have striven to avoid errors and incorrect statements. Any that remain are solely our responsibility. We hope that we have the opportunity to correct any such problems in future editions.
