Sequence stratigraphy significantly contributes to our comprehension of the geological history of the Middle East, a region that holds roughly 65% of the world’s remaining oil reserves and about 35% of its gas reserves. Most of these valuable resources lie within the Arabian Plate, where Sequence Stratigraphy has played a crucial role in deciphering the intricate sedimentary sequences and depositional environments that have molded its geology, rich in hydrocarbons.

Back in 2000, global daily oil production averaged 76 million barrels per day (MM bopd), and Sequence Stratigraphy contributed to the understanding of the sedimentary successions responsible for these hydrocarbon reserves. Middle Eastern countries, especially OPEC members like Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, played a pivotal role in shaping the global oil production landscape, contributing approximately 40% of the world’s oil production. Sequence Stratigraphy aided in deciphering the geological context of these oil-producing regions.

By the fourth quarter of 2000, daily global oil production reached 78.4 MM bopd, approaching global supply capacity, and Sequence Stratigraphy continued to be an essential tool for assessing the geological constraints and opportunities in meeting the world’s energy demands.

According to the OPEC World Economic Model (OWEM) of 2000, it expected that global oil demand would experience a surge of 27 million barrels of oil per day (MM bopd), representing a 35% increase by 2020. The model projected that OPEC would capture over 50% of the market share between 2007 and 2016. If these forecasts materialize, Middle East oil production would need to increase by at least 15 MM bopd, possibly even doubling current levels, to meet this rising demand. Thus, the swift and efficient development of this oil production capacity becomes crucial for powering the global economy.

Understanding the relationships between the reservoirs responsible for this oil production and their respective source and seal lithologies becomes paramount in the context of Sequence Stratigraphy. This GeoArabia Special Publication 2 presents the findings of a study on the sequence stratigraphy of late Precambrian and Phanerozoic sedimentary successions on the Arabian Plate, conducted by the British independent oil company, LASMO plc, shedding light on the geological aspects of the region.
