Book Summary

The book “Flow in Porous Rocks: Energy and Environmental Applications” evolved from a series of lectures that discussed the production of oil and gas from layered permeable rocks. These lectures primarily addressed the challenge of ensuring the effective displacement of oil from injection wells to production wells through complex and heterogeneous rock formations.

In recent years, I have integrated these lectures with my ongoing research in various fluid mechanical aspects. This integration has covered (i) harnessing heat for power generation in geothermal systems, (ii) addressing scale formation in porous rocks, (iii) tackling the challenges of carbon sequestration, and (iv) managing the dispersion of radioactive contaminants from geological nuclear waste repositories. This combination has resulted in the creation of a graduate-level course focused on fluid mechanics within energy systems in porous rocks.

The book “Flow in Porous Rocks: Energy and Environmental Applications” delves into the physical processes that impact oil and gas production, CO2 sequestration, and geothermal energy generation. It integrates a range of simplified physical models that encapsulate the numerous intricate processes associated with porous media flow, thereby offering valuable insights into various phenomena. However, it employs results from laboratory experiments to vividly illustrate these processes. Furthermore, it utilizes quantitative scalings to precisely pinpoint the primary factors influencing the flows. Consequently, it significantly aids in the development of a deeper understanding of these processes.

After a brief discussion of the importance of oil and gas resources for global energy supply, this book reviews the topology of various porous rocks and presents simplified models for pressure-driven flow through a variety of complex rock architectures.
