Book Summary

“Geoscientists worldwide actively pursue one of the most crucial exploration reservoirs, as covered in this memoir on “Fine-Grained Turbidite Systems”.

28 chapters show the results of an intense research effort in the 1990s that resulted from the discovery of large hydrocarbon accumulations in fine-grained turbidite systems in Brazil, the Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, and the North Sea.

A lack of a comprehensive text on fine-grained turbidite systems and confusion over nomenclature led to a pivotal meeting during the AAPG/SEPM Annual Convention in 1997 in Dallas, Texas. Although there was no room for a half-day session, an SEPM-sponsored field trip attracted over 50 participants to explore the Pennsylvanian Jackfork Formation’s fine-grained deepwater turbidite systems in Arkansas. The then-president-elect of SEPM, Lee Krystinik, proposed the creation of an edited book on the subject, with several field trip attendees as contributors.

Efforts to share the work burden resulted in Chuck Stelting providing valuable advice, and Charlie Stone accepting the co-editor role. Instead of the conventional organization by age, modernity, and subsurface categorization, a thematic structure was adopted, with various experts leading seven themes.

Publication success hinged on dedicated reviewers who helped authors improve their manuscripts. The first joint publication between SEPM and AAPG, overseen by AAPG, marked the start of a continued collaboration.

Collaboration between societies, including AAPG and SEPM, as well as assistance from professionals and students, significantly contributed to the book’s success. Gratitude extended to those who helped in this endeavor.

Industry and academia have joined together in this publication and the result is a unique opportunity to study these turbidite systems from the outcrop to the modeling; through the interpretation with 2-D and 3-D seismic data; to case histories and analog studies from Arkansas and Oklahoma, South and West Africa, Gulf of Mexico, west Texas, and New Zealand.
