This book provides a learning tool needed to approach geomorphic applications to river management. Recognition of the diversity of river forms and processes, and how they fit together and interact at the catchment scale, provides a physical basis to frame ecosystem-based river rehabilitation activities. A series of interpretative filters is applied to assess geomorphic river condition and recovery potential in light of appropriate attributes of river character and behavior for the given type of river under consideration, its evolutionary history, and likely trajectory of change. Procedures are outlined with which to differentiate ongoing “natural” adjustments from human-induced disturbance and associated implications for river change (whether reversible or otherwise). These various components are brought together within a coherent package termed the River Styles Framework. Applications of this generic template emphasize river dynamics, focusing on the changing nature of linkages of biophysical processes viewed in a catchment context. Such insights provide a basis to derive realistic visions in river management practice, putting geomorphic theory into practice.
