Book Summary

The book of Manual of Soil Laboratory Testing is the second of a series of three, intended primarily to provide a working manual for laboratory technicians and others engaged in the testing of soils for building and engineering purposes. The Manual of Soil Laboratory Testing not meant in any way to be used as a substitute for the Standards referred to therein, but to augment their requirements by the provision of step-by-step procedures.

Under Eurocode 7, only Class 1 samples may be used for undisturbed shear strength and consolidation testing and this has resulted in a greater diversity in the diameter of samples presented for testing. We have tried to address these issues in Chapters 9 and 13, but would welcome any comments that readers may wish to offer.

Chapter 8, which describes the laboratory equipment needed to perform the tests, has been amended to include summary descriptions of current electronic measuring instruments, which will be discussed in greater detail in Volume 3.

A basic knowledge of mathematics and physics has been assumed and the chapters relating to test procedures include some general background information and basic theory. We hope that this will provide an appreciation of the significance and limitations of the tests and an appreciation of certain basic principles which are sometimes difficult to grasp.
