Engineering and environmental geological mapping is a method easily understood by non-geological professionals such as geologists and planners to map the top tens of meters of the diverse rocks and soils that make up the Earth’s surface, and in exceptional cases. It has to do with representing the above. In order to get the most out of maps, it is of utmost importance that he can easily interpret 3D reality from 2D maps and floor plans. Having established the basic principles of engineering geological mapping, guidance is provided on how to create such maps and what to put on them. Two aspects are particularly important for geologists. One is the description of the soil material in terms that convey its possible engineering properties and behavior. National and international standards have been developed for this purpose. Another is to help or simplify the interpretation of the map. The striping method and the more general zoning method that deviates from traditional geological approaches to mapping show how this is done. The principles are illustrated with examples at small scales, terrain assessments at medium scales, and urban geology and construction sites at the largest scales. Environmental aspects include hazard and risk assessment, and land and water management. Computer-aided mapping offers exciting prospects for the future
